Top Beers of 2012...

Ok so 2012 is quickly coming to a close and what a great year for craft beer this year has been... Ive narrowed down my selections to just ten beers that really made an impression on me and other beer lovers in the New England this past year. I have tried to take a couple of things into consideration when compiling this list such as regional availability, local favorites, cult followings and style variations.

Without further ado here is the Bottle Foragers picks for best beers of 2012 !

Barrel Aged Farmhouse Pale Ale

From Maine's very best farmhouse brewery comes this wonderful barrel aged selection only available from the brewery or on a rare occasion at Novare Res in Portland.

Oxbow is currently selling the fourth batch of this beer and every batch has been slightly different based on the barrel in which it was aged.  I have had the pleasure of drinking multiples from each barrel and I will say the last two batched have completely knocked it out of the park and Im alway hoping I have some extra money to add one of these bottles to my haul when heading to Oxbow for growler fills.

For a detailed listing of barrels used from batch to batch look HERE

750ml retails for $15

House Beer

House beer has arrived and its another great selection from Allagash's long list of top notch brews. This one is available only at the brewery here in Portland ME and is sold by the case only. It comes in a classic old world wooden crate that houses twenty four 12oz bottles of this wonderful belgain style session beer.

24btl case retails for $40
(with $20 deposit on wooden crate)

Tasting notes :
Pours a medium golden brown color with a rich foamy three finger head that laces down and forms a nice cap on the beer. Aromas are light-handed but focused with yeasty spice mingling harmoniously with touches of citrus and honeyed malts. On the palate it continues to please with full flavored bright notes of yeasty bread, earthy sweet malts and a zesty citrus hop bitterness that kisses the finish and begs you to take another sip. Wow what a session beer a pure pleasure to drink !

 Coolship Resurgam

While Im thinking about Allagash and the year 2012...I had to include one of their Coolship releases. This is another brewery only release, however the Resurgam  actually was available for over a week at the brewery which is actually much longer than most of these spontaneously fermented beers last. And it just so happens that its probably my favorite in the series.

375ml retails for $15

Tasting Notes:
Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow with a touch of foam and some side and bottom rising bubbles. Aromas are sour fruit, young nectarine, berry, dusty, wood and funk. On the palate its comes off ripe and sour with tart bright touches of grapefruit and a beautiful funky rustic dry earthy finish. Damn this is probably the most classic gueuze Ive had from the states.

MO

You may be looking at this saying... what about Lunch !  And if your looking at this and you don't know Maine Beer Co. than you best get off your computer and head over to the nearest bottle shop  and snatch up any of the beers they brew. Because they all are worth trying. The reason I chose MO over Lunch is basic availability  As Lunch comes and goes, you can almost always find a fresh batch of MO on the shelf of your favorite beer store. A classic pale ale with a hop forward presence this beer is a great gateway into the wonderful world of craft beer.

16.9oz retails for $5.99

Tasting Notes:
Pours a light copper color with frothy three finger head. Aromas are pineapple, pine and a touch of sweet grapefruit. Dont let the pale ale fool you, MBC brings the hop flavors ! On the palate this one hits the mark, great mouthfeel and carbonation to carry the balanced flavors on a journey of excellence.
Grapefruit, pine, mango... ride the toasty malt flavors to completion !

 Strawberry ShortWeiss

One of the first in Smutty's newest method of distributing beer... small batch release days ! This one happened in August and I had the pleasure of driving down to pick up this charming refreshing release that was limited to four 750's per person at the brewery only. It also showed up on draft lists at fine beer establishments up and down the east coast so if you had the pleasure of drinking this Im sure you would agree this beer was a highlight of 2012 and I really hope they release this again every summer !

750ml retails for $15

Tasting Notes:
Pours a slightly hazy blondish orange color with a two finger fizzy head that fizzles out quickly. Aromas jump out of the glass with fresh strawberry touches tart stone-fruit and a nice malty cereal sweetness. On the palate this beer jumps and sings summer ! Great flavors of strawberry tartness that is just enough without being syrupy... but more the flavor of a tart slightly green berry... backed by beautiful cereal malts and a touch of tangy yeast.

Cant Dog Imperial Pale Ale

Another highlight from Maine in 2012 was the much anticipated arrival of Marshall Wharf cans in southern Maine. We have all become acquainted with this top notch midcoast brewery over the years... whether you have had it by the pint at Three Tides or Novare Res, or you made it up to the brewery where they fill growlers in Belfast. Now we CAN all smile because they have are delivering 16oz cans on a bi-weekly basis. So far the only selection they have put into their cans is Cant Dog but if you have had the pelasure of consuming one of these, chances are you have been a repeat consumer of this fresh tasty brew !

16oz can retails for $4.99

Tasting Notes:
Pours a rich copper color with a big foamy three finger head. On the nose it got a big citrus pineapple nose with touches of sweet spicy malts. On the palate... damn this is good ! Big fruity citrus, fruity pebbles and pine on the front balance beautifully off the slightly earthy spiced sweet caramel malts that hold their own but also keep a backseat to the great hop flavors. The mouthfeel on this is dead on... rich and smooth but not sticky !

 Breakfast Stout

New to Maine this year is Founder's Brewing out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Quickly exploding onto the shelves and into the hands of local beer lovers this brewery produces solid American style brews that scream quality and dedication. For over fifteen years they have become one of the leaders in the US craft beer movement and one of my favorites for a go to palate pleasing 6pk or 4pk. When Founder's first hit the local market the buzz around bar stools everywhere turned to when are we going to receive their highly acclaimed Breakfast Stout ! Welp at the beginning of the autumn we found out the time had come... and for a 100 point rated beer to be available throughout the cold season here in Maine...this beer has made many local beer lovers into real believers including me !

4pks retail for $9.99

Tasting Notes:
Pours a deep rich umber black color with three fingers of sticky mocha foam. That glass gets lathered with lacing as the foam rest on top of the chocolate nectar. Aromas are pure and sweet; chocolate, coffee, vanilla bean roasted malts and maybe a touch of licorice if you want to really stretch out the nose. On the palate its creamy and smooth with great balance between all the great notes found in the nose. A touch of sweetness lifts it up and out of the bitter burnt flavors that other imperial stouts sometimes over do. Its soft and very approachable and is a great treat for breakfast on a crisp autumn day in Maine !

Bourbon County Stout

Another new addition to the local craft beer scene and a much anticipated release. I will not take the time at this moment to state my opinions on the InBev buyout of Goose Island but rather spend my time here embracing the fact that another 100 point rated stout has hit Maine shelves this year and if your lucky enough to have scored some of these or the even more limited variants then consider yourself one of the lucky ones. I have not yet officially rated this beer as I believe it to be one of those beers that you just need to obtain when you see it, then worry about when to consume it. Its big burly 15% abv makes it an IDEAL bottle to stash away and age for up to 5 years in the basement.  Fresh out of the bottle this beer is boozy, with big dark bitter chocolate, ripe dark fruit and touches of bourbon... I've shared a bottle or two with a few friends over the course of the last month or so and have plans on sipping one every year until I feel they have hit their "magic" spot... this review is to be continued  !

4pks retail $24

Arthur

Ok how can I have a top 10 beers of 2012 and not include at least one Hill Farmstead beer. Now I know this is not available in Maine but any person who considers themselves a beer connoisseur should include a trip to Vermont to obtain some of the world class beers being brewed up in Greensboro VT. For a full rundown of my last trip check out my previous post here ! I decided to choose my favorite Hill Farmstead beer that is pretty regularly available at the brewery and leave the small limited bottles for future posts. As far as saisons go this ranks in my top three of all time....

750ml retails $10

Tasting Notes:
Pours a nice golden color with a lively froth... great aromas of funky tart citrus, white pepper and barnyard yeast. On the palate its nicely balanced between doughy sour notes and bright citrus acidity. The flavors play well together in a rustic grassy farmhouse saison style that is tuned perfectly to my personal palate. Love the tartness...need more!

Heady Topper

Last but not least we head down from Greensboro Vt and over to Waterbury to the hottest can on the market in 2012. Heady Topper... an amazingly drinkable DIPA (double ipa) that has become one of the most sought after four packs I have ever scene. Distributed sparsely in Vermont and routinely selling out every week this beer is the kind of beer people fill trunks with. A lot of people will ask... is it really THAT good and all I can say is try it and you will be hooked. Whenever you hear someone saying they are headed to Vermont your ears will perk up and you have to ask... "are you gonna be stopping at the Alchemist?" because ill take a case... the good news is they are upping production in 2013 and on that note I recommend you acquiring some yourself and see what all the fuss is about !

4pk retails $12

Tasting Notes:
Opened with the pull of the tab... nice silver can with cool little label. Drinkin it from the can the way it tells you too ! (Ive dumped it in the glass a few times as well) Anyhow... rich aromas of pineapple and a touch of pine...fresh tropical hops....mmmm Flavors are rich full and heady... Pineapple sweetness at the start that rolls into a crisp bitterness of citrus and pine... it starts to get a little sappy but the finish brings out a whole heap of tropical flavors again that make this beer a big WINNER !

This week in foraging....

So it has been a couple weeks and I've been very busy working on seeking out some big scores for the upcoming holidays.  The nights are growing longer and some of those dusty bottles of barleywines and imperial stouts have been slowly pulled to the front of the cellar.  I am currently working out some blog kinks and have some things in the works to keep this blog active and informative as we slowly draw closer to 2013.  As always any comments and feedback are much appreciated but for now a quick glimpse into the last few weeks of foraging and tasting !

Rockmill OG Saison & Cask Aged Tripel, Bruery 3 Calling Birds,
Three Floyds BrooDoo, Fat Heads Headhunter IPA & Bumble Berry.

A night with friends... some delicious beers were consumed... including the HFS growler of Abner.

Crooked Stave WWBY
(more from this brewery coming for the holidays !)

The last in Stone Vertical Epic Series 12.12.12 and a lovely Hitachino XH

Just arrived from my friend in St. Louis, some 4Hands that I can't wait to try...

And finally some grabs for this weekend including a trip to Oxbow to fill up on some growlers a bottle of BAFPA Batch#4 and a couple of kegs of Space Cowboy and Freestyle #11 (not pictured) for a house party... Also pictured a couple 4pks of Heady some Goose Island BCS Cherry Rye, 2012 Brooklyn Black Ops and Dogfish Heads new collaboration with italian brewers baladin and birra del borgo... what a week !

And a quick pick from a few weeks ago when the Bottle Forager made a special appearance at Oxbow Brewing Company for their annual "Goods from the Woods".

Cheers....

Hill Farmstead Trip....

So sometimes you just need to travel to a sure spot to go foraging for bottles.  Sometimes these places are not just in your backyard... what that means is a road trip !  What does a road trip consist of? First thing is find a co-pilot, pick a day and watch the weather. I spent the month of October doing this as well as alerting other bottle searchers in my local circle about the upcoming journey. That way not only would I be helping them snag some beer but with a little order fee I could alleviate the cost of gas and focus my hard earned dollars on BEER.  This particular journey was a small bounce through western Maine, over through the white mountains, across the green hills of Vermont and northbound to a little spot that is very quickly becoming the epitome of New England farmhouse brewing. Hill Farmstead.

Here is a glimpse of the trip.... through the eyes of my co-pilot.

and our final destination... 164 miles 3.25 hours.
Once there we stretched a bit and used the portapotty... there wasn't one last time!

Inside we found a packed house of about 10-20 people steadily marking down orders, sipping beer samples and watching Shaun Hill check his Iphone, mark down notes and help wash glasses. We ordered through our samplers and finalized the large haul that we prepared. Growlers and 750ml pours for myself and a large array of bottles for the Portland crew.

All in all it took 2.5 hours to grab some samples, work out a side order for another brewer friend and get everything loaded up and ready for the journey back into Portland.
We did make a quick stop in downtown Hardwick to pick up a few snacks a coffee and some Jasper Hill cheese. We also had to double check that we couldn't snag some Heady Topper from a spot that worked out last time I was in town.

Night fell as we weaved through the ominous white mountains... a quick stop at Moat Mountain for a little dinner and a Iron Mike Pale Ale. Then back to Portland to unload.

Total Haul:

Draft Fills
Growlers : 2x Abner
750ml Fills: 3xAbner, 1xSusan, 1xGeorge, 1xS&S #5, 1xEdward

26 Twilight of Idols
18 Arthur
17  Anna
6  Clara
4  Juicy

2Anchorage Bitter Monk
1 Jolly Pumpkin Noel de Calabaza
1 Grassroots/Mikkeller Wheat is the New Hops

*not including a hefty lil order by my co-pilot

As I type this Im cleaning up a 750ml of Society and Solitude #5.... looking at my calendar and figuring out the next road trip to the Hill !

Lion's Pride "Guided Beer & Cheese Pairing"

Portland Beer Week
Beer & Cheese Pairing
November 4, 2012

(Beers of Oxbow Brewing & a selection of Local Maine Artisanal Cheeses)
with the Oxbow brewers and Ruth Miller "the beer & cheese maven"

What a way to kick off Maine Beer Week... My wife and I, along with a good friend and fellow bottle forager headed up to Lion' Pride Pub in Brunswick for this event ! Brunswick ends up being about a half hour from Portland and if you have yet to make it up to this pub I would urge you to do so. Its a little less hip than Novare Res and usually a little more subdued and relaxing. The food selection is a step up and the draft list is always changing with some of the best import and domestic craft brews available in the state of Maine. In fact the owners just happens to be Chris & Jen Lively who are also the owners of the famous Ebenezer's Pub in Lovell as well ! Anyhow... we strolled in with just enough time to say hello to Chris the owner, the Oxbow crew (Tim, Geoff, Mike and Jake) and Ruth the cheese monger who put the whole event together.

The event was a great success with about 30 attendees exposing themselves to the flavors of some wonderful Maine cheeses, expertly paired with exciting brews from Oxbow. In fact one of the farms, Sunflower Farm, out of Cumberland, was in the house as well !  Everyone was seated and presented with a plate (pictured above) as well as a sheet listing the beers to be served and the order in which they should be enjoyed. As each beer was poured the Cheese Maven explained to the room the process in which each cheese was made as well as the flavor profiles and how they react to the current beer being poured. Then the brewers took the reigns and provided us a summary of the beers being served as well as the components each beer brought to the masterful pairings.

Here is the tasting menu:

Loretta- rustic blonde grisette brewed with raw wheat grown in Pittston.
Sunflower Farm "Chevre"- fresh goat milk cheese from Cumberland.

Farmhouse Pale Ale- american hops meet saison yeast
Hahn's End "Olde Shiretown"- english style raw cow cheddar from Phippsburg.

Space Cowboy- "house" country ale with nice earthy malts and noble hops
Hahn's End "City of Ships"- raw cow milk alpine style
York Hill "Capriano"- cave aged goat milk tomme from New Sharon.

Oxtoberfest - farmhouse festbier featuring german malts and hints of smoke
Hahn's End "Ragged Island"- hard aged cow milk cheese from Phippsburg.

Funkhaus - custom blend for event, brettanomyces laced beer with tropical hop notes
Spring Day Creamery "La Vie en Rose" - washed rind cow milk tomme from Durham
(1st place 2012 American Cheese Society Competition - Washed Rind Category)

Freestyle #5- black wheat saison with three wheat varieties and noble hops
Spring Day Creamery "Spring Day Blues"- cow milk raw blue cher from Durham, ME
(2nd place American Cheese Society Competition - Blue Category)

What an event... keep your eyes open for other events with Oxbow, Lion's Pride and the Beer & Cheese Maven involved. You will be glad you did !

Cheers

A successful week of Foraging !

(Surly Brewing out of Minnesota)

(From Florida... Green Room/ St. Somewhere Collaboration and a couple Cigar City beers)

You may sit there and ask yourself... where did these beers come from?  Will the Bottle Forager ever divulge his foraging spots...

Stay tuned for answers to all these questions.

But for now it is the WEEKEND, so call a friend, grab a few glasses and raise them up to the exciting fast growing world of craft beer!

Cheers.

Blended Oxtoberfest Review

Brewers Notes:
Blended Oxtoberfest will be a varied blend of barrel-aged and fresh Oxtoberfest every year. 2011/2012: Barrel: Riesling/Time: 12 months Additions: mixed bretts, lactobacillus # of bottles: 398

the Bottle Forager's Notes:
Pours a rusty orange brown with a puffy three fingers of foam. Aromas are a little tart fruit, smoked malts, oak and a hint of herbal mint. On the palate its complex but nicely balanced with smokey malts, peat and some earthy rustic wood mixing with bright tart fruit and toasted vanilla notes. Quite an interesting beer thats different than anything Ive ever drank... bridges the gap between german sours and a traditional marzen. Yum !

Bottles are still available at the brewery... $20 ea and remember the new tasting room hours...
Wed-Fri 2pm-7pm

Go find some for yourself and your friends.

Cheers

"Where the Wild Biers Are" Rundown

Rolled into Novare Res around quarter to four and the bar and most of the seats in the place were full. The draft list was packed with some great selections that covered the map with choices from New England, Belgium, Italy, Germany and Switzerland.  The bar was packed with local brewers, distributors,  beer geeks and even Brian Ewing from 12% Imports was there !

Notable highlights on the draft list were as follows
Cantillon Classic Gueuze
Tilquin, Petrus Aged Pale, Allagash Old HLT,
Allagash FV13, Cisco Lady of the Woods,
Cisco Monomoy Kriek, Smutty Brett & I.

Overall I went and had a great time catching up with some old friends and chatting with a few new friends as well. Its nice to see the popularity of sour beers is growing because of course where there is demand there will be supply.  Hopefully !  That being said, and I realize I may sound spoiled, but nothing on the draft list really made me go DAMN !  I understand the logistics behind what is available in the state of Maine and the legalities behind what is being poured... but I would have liked to see a little more rarity in the selections rather than a list that looked more like what could be thrown together in a couple of weeks with a few phone calls. Again, I will say I was excited and impressed with the event but when I hear about a stockpiled tower... Im thinking more about things I cannot find readily  available on the shelves of local bottle shops... and with the exception of the Allagash drafts and the older single batch Smuttynose Brett & I (which was delicious) I was expecting a little more.... I mean maybe the rumors are not true that Novare has a stockpile of vintage Cantillon in the basement... why couldn't a couple vintage bottles make it onto the menu for glass pours... or even a 4oz bottle pour sampler.  Why couldn't Novare get Shelton Bros. to send some barrels of anything but Classic. Im not looking for an answer I just wanted to give my honest thorough opinion of this event. Now that I have... its back to the search.  Keep up the good work Novare.

Cheers.

Oxbow Brewing Opens Tasting Room !

Just Announced... the tasting room at Oxbow is now open for business.

Wed-Fri
2pm-7pm
with tour on Friday at 4:30pm

I had the pleasure of rolling up there tonight after the soft opening last night on Halloween. The tasting room is great and fits the farmhouse style to perfection. Think rustic, cozy and inviting and your just cracking the surface.  Lots of classy swag available and the best part, in my opinion, is they can now offer up to seven different selections on draught for growler fills ! The Oxbow crew as always is keeping it real and producing the very best farmhouse beer Maine has to offer. Stay tuned for much more exciting news about this brewery as they continue to produce phenomenal brews.

Here is a quick glimpse of the new tasting room:

Quaint ,welcoming and packed full of wicked provisions !

Had to sneak over to the brewery and see how clean up was coming along after a long day of brewing...

Clean up went well.

Now get  up there and see it for yourself.  Currently they have two new bottle releases  available and dont forget to help your friends out and refill their growlers while your up there !
Check back here for more about the contents of these exciting bottles and other fertile spots bound to hold some bottle scores.

Thanks Again OXBOW !
